Double Bass Drum Sets

If you are looking for a heavy sound then double bass drum sets are the way to go. This type of set up is most popular among heavy metal and grunge bands – but it can also suit other music types such as jazz and Latino music. In fact this was something that was originally developed for jazz music and was invented by a high school student back in the 1940s. The main difference with double bass drum sets and other types is that they have an extra drum.

Things to Consider with Double Bass Drum Sets

- If you have never used double bass drum sets previously it make take you a while to get used to this set up. It is actually quite surprising what a big difference adding an extra drum to the equation can make. It pushes everything else closer together and if you are already familiar with a standard drum set it can feel a bit awkward and you are likely to be clumsy in the beginning. In fact some people claim that it is almost like going back and starting from beginner.

- It can be a good idea to approach double drum bass like a beginner even if you are already an experienced drummer with the standard instrument. It is harder to unlearn something than it is to learn it in the first place and the extra pedal will make a huge difference. Of course the experienced drummer should adapt quickly but this can be helped along if they approach it with a beginner’s mind.

- An alternative to having an extra drum is to have two pedals that are operated by different feet. Another option is a double base pedal which is a good choice for beginners who have no real desire to become an experienced double bass player.

- It is recommended that those learning to play double bass drum sets should get familiar to playing with their heel up. Playing with the heel down will just slow drummers down and it feels too awkward this way.

- Try and stay relaxed and learn the most effective muscle groups for playing.

Double bass drum sets provide a great sound but it can take some getting used to. The extra effort is worth though and you are sure to end up with an impressive sound. If this all sounds like too much work then you might want to look at a double bass pedal.
